What is Sattvic food?

Sattvic food is the purest category in Ayurvedic dietary classification. Sattvic foods are fresh, natural, minimally processed, and free from artificial additives, think fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and fresh dairy products. In Ayurveda, Sattvic foods are said to promote mental clarity, inner peace, and spiritual balance. They form the foundation of the Ayurvedic diet and are the preferred choice for those following a yogic or mindful lifestyle.

Sattvic foods are ideally eaten fresh, lightly cooked, and without excessive seasoning. Foods that sit overnight, are microwaved repeatedly, or contain preservatives lose their Sattvic quality and move toward Tamasic. Browse verified Sattvic products →

Is Sattvic food the same as Vegan food?

No — Sattvic and Vegan are separate classifications that sometimes overlap but often diverge. Sattvic foods can include fresh dairy products such as milk, ghee, and yoghurt, none of which are vegan. Conversely, some vegan foods — garlic, onion, processed plant-based meats — are Rajasic or Tamasic. SatvikScan shows both the Guna classification and separate Vegan, Vegetarian, and Jain badges on every product page, so you always see the full picture.

What makes a food Tamasic?

A food is considered Tamasic in Ayurveda when it is heavy, stale, fermented, or heavily industrially processed. Classic Tamasic ingredients include meat, alcohol, onion, garlic, mushrooms, and overripe or reheated food. Most ultra-processed packaged foods (NOVA Group 4) also fall into the Tamasic category, which is why SatvikScan displays the NOVA score alongside the Guna classification — the two systems frequently align.
