Terms of Service

By downloading, accessing, or using SatvikScan (the "App"), whether by creating an account or continuing as a Guest, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, you must immediately stop using the App and delete it from your device.

SatvikScan determines dietary statuses (Vegan, Vegetarian, Jain, Sattvic) and processing levels (NOVA Groups 1–4) by analysing barcodes and text against data from the Open Food Facts (OFF) database and our user community.

• Crowdsourced data: Ingredients can be entered incorrectly, or a manufacturer may change their recipe without notifying the database.
• AI & OCR limitations: SatvikScan uses OCR and localised AI to read ingredient lists from photos. This technology is prone to errors. Do not rely on OCR for severe allergy or health-critical decisions.
• Manual verification required: It is your sole responsibility to manually read the physical label on any product before consumption.
• No medical advice: SatvikScan does not provide medical advice. If you have severe food allergies or medical conditions, do not rely solely on this App.

SatvikScan categorises foods into gunas (Sattvic, Rajasic, Tamasic) and dietary profiles based on internal algorithmic rules and keyword matching. You acknowledge that:

• Spiritual subjectivity: Religious and spiritual dietary guidelines are highly subjective and culturally variable. Our classifications do not constitute absolute religious or spiritual authority.
• Not an allergen tool: SatvikScan is not an allergen-detection tool. Do not rely on it to detect life-threatening allergens (e.g., peanuts, gluten, dairy). Crowdsourced data frequently omits "may contain" warnings.

By using SatvikScan, you agree to the collection and processing of your data as outlined in our Privacy Policy. Specifically:

• Usage analytics: We use Google Analytics 4 and Vercel Analytics to monitor performance and track aggregated usage patterns.
• Data handling: These services may collect non-personally identifiable information such as approximate location, device type, and page interactions.

You may use the App anonymously as a Guest or sign in via Google. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate any account, at any time, for any reason, without notice.

SatvikScan allows users to submit products, flag errors, and upload ingredient lists. By submitting content:

• You grant SatvikScan a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to use, display, and distribute that content.
• You agree not to upload false information, offensive language, or malicious content.
• Zero tolerance: We actively moderate submissions and may instantly ban users and permanently delete content that violates these terms.

• App points: Virtual points have no monetary value, cannot be exchanged for cash, and may be reset or revoked at any time without notice.
• Website advertising: Our website and educational pages may display third-party advertisements or affiliate links. We are not responsible for claims made by third-party advertisers.

You agree not to:

• Use automated scripts, bots, or scrapers to extract data from the App or our databases.
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code or proprietary classification algorithms.
• Use the App to build a competitive product or service.

Product data retrieved from Open Food Facts is available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). SatvikScan's proprietary code, design, and internal databases remain the intellectual property of SatvikScan.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, SatvikScan, its creators, and affiliates shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of health, profits, or data, resulting from your access to or use of the App. The App is provided on an "as-is" and "as available" basis without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or accuracy of dietary matching.

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless SatvikScan, its developers, and affiliates from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses arising from:

• Your access to or use of the App.
• Your violation of these Terms, including submitting false or malicious UGC.
• Your violation of any third-party right, including intellectual property or privacy rights.

• Changes to terms: We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Continued use after modifications constitutes acceptance. Significant changes will be notified within the App.
• Account deletion: You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time via the App's settings. Community contributions may be anonymised and retained to maintain database integrity.

SatvikScan is operated from New South Wales, Australia. By using the App, you agree to:

• Governing law: These Terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
• Exclusive venue: Any legal proceedings shall be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts of New South Wales, Australia.
• Informal resolution first: Before filing a claim, please contact satvikscan@gmail.com to attempt informal resolution.
• International users: Nothing in these Terms deprives you of mandatory consumer protections under the laws of your country of residence.
