Is vegan the same as Sattvic?

No. Vegan and Sattvic are different classification systems that often overlap but are not identical. Vegan is a strict ingredient test — no animal products of any kind. Sattvic is an Ayurvedic quality classification that can include fresh dairy like milk, ghee, and yoghurt, none of which are vegan. Conversely, some vegan foods — such as garlic, onion, or heavily processed plant-based meat substitutes — are classified as Rajasic or Tamasic in Ayurveda. SatvikScan shows both classifications separately so you can filter by whichever matters to you.

Can a product be vegan but not vegetarian?

No — every vegan product is automatically vegetarian, since veganism is the stricter subset of the two diets. Vegetarian allows dairy, eggs, and honey; vegan excludes all of them. A product can be vegetarian without being vegan (for example, a cheese made with dairy), but it cannot be vegan without also being vegetarian.

Every classification is then reviewed by a human moderator before being marked verified, so only confirmed vegan products appear as vegan in the directory.

Why does a product's vegan status matter alongside its Sattvic classification?

The two systems answer different questions. Sattvic classification reflects Ayurvedic quality principles around freshness and purity, while vegan status is a strict, universally recognised dietary standard that excludes any animal-derived ingredient. Someone following a vegan diet for ethical or health reasons needs the vegan badge specifically — a product can be Sattvic and still contain dairy, so relying on the Sattvic label alone would not reliably identify vegan products.

Are all plant-based products automatically vegan?

No. A product being plant-based in origin doesn't guarantee it's vegan — many plant-based foods are processed using animal-derived aids, such as sugar refined with bone char, or wine and juice clarified with gelatin or isinglass. Additives and colourings like carmine (E120) also sometimes appear in products marketed as plant-based.
